Evil Telco Service - Poster Session

One of the most interesting and rewarding classes I took at Berkeley was CS194, a Mobile class taught by Kurtis Heimerl and Eric Brewer. Unlike most of the undergraduate courses I had taken, this class was structured more like a graduate-level course. We went over many different topics, but our main focus was a semester-long research project.
In fact, I enjoyed this class so much, I decided to do research with Kurtis and Eric in the TIER group.

The project I worked on was one in which my group members (Patrick Tiet, Shirley Wu, and Fadi Haddad) and I set up a 2G cell phone network with the purpose of illustrating just how insecure mobile communications currently are. We dubbed it "Evil Telco Service." At the end of the semester, we presented our work in a poster session with the rest of our classmates.

今日は先生、常に学生

　私の空手の先生、デービッド・ベル先生は１９５５年にアメリカ大陸のサウスキャロライナという州で生まれた。ご両親はアフリカ系アメリカ人だ。１８年前からベル先生はフリーモントで韓国の空手道の先生をしている。その時からベル先生は３００人も教えて色々な人の人生から学び、とても知識豊富になった。その経験からベル先生は控えめだが強くなった。ベル先生の人生はとても豊かで、人を助ける人生である。
　ベル先生は私が１３歳の時からの空手の先生である。空手を始めてから、ベル先生のおかげで、強くなってきた。空手の先生と言っても、実際にベル先生は私の人生のアドバイザーのような人である。一年ほど前、クラスには私とほかの家族の三人がいた。家族は５歳の男子と６歳の女子と中年のお母さんだった。その日、クラスが始まってからベル先生は子供達に「今日、学校で何を学んだ？」と聞いた。子供達は喜んで太陽系について話した。それをよく聞いて、ベル先生は「へえ？それは面白いね。私はそんなことについてあんまり知らなかった」と言った。子供達はとても喜んでもっと説明した。それから、ベル先生は「私は毎日学生からもっと学べるから幸せだ」と言った。
　どうしてベル先生が毎日のように子供達にそんな質問をするのかと考えた。最初は、子供達のためだった。子供達には学ぶことはとても面白いから、ほかの人に説明できるなら喜んでして、自分にもっとわかるようになる。それと、ベル先生は私とお母さんにどうやっていい先生になるのかを教えたかった。最後に、ベル先生は自分でもっと学びたかった。５６歳の先生であるものの５歳の子供から学んでいた。この経験から、私は学ぶことに対する考え方が変わった。今は、ベル先生の影響で、学ぶことは終わらないと言う考え方で生きている。
　ベル先生は私が尊敬している人だ。今でも、私はベル先生の学生だ。毎週、三日フリーモントのクラスに行く。バークレーの学生だからこのクラスは時間もお金もかかって不便だが未だ行く。私は毎日もっといい事を学べるからだ。私達人間は学び過ぎる事がありえないからこそ、学ぶことを辞めないべきだ。「学生」と言う称号を捨てると生きている意味がなくなるのだ。私はベル先生の言葉をぜったいに忘れない：「今日は先生、常に学生」

留学の目的

     日本語に興味を持つようになってから日本へ行きたくなった。バークレーに入る前、留学のことを聞いて行こうと思ってプランを作った。UCの交換プログラムを利用して留学をしたいと思っている。
     今まで、日本へ行った事がないから留学でその経験を味わいたい。留学したら日本人学生と友達になれる。日本の学生の生活も味わえる。それと、日本はコンピューターサイエンスで有名だから自分の専門の事をよく研究できる。学校以外にもたくさんできる。ほかの国の文化や人や景色や建物や家や食べ物や生活や季節などを中から味わえる。そして、日本語がもっと上手になれる。
     クラス以外の活動がたくさんある。例えば空手道や研究やカラオケなど。留学生は忙しそうだが時間があれば、色々な活動に参加するつもりだ。僕は空手道を練習しているからほかの国でももっと学ぶ。研究も好きだから学びながら世界の知識を加えられるかも知れない。例えば、日本語を英語でやさしく訳すポータブルコンピューターが作れる。
   UCの交換プログラムを利用すれば、単位を認めてくれるのでとてもいいようだ。行ける大学が八つもある。でも、科学の専門なら大阪大学でLab Researchと東北大学でEngineering & Scienceが多分、一番いい。CSのアドバイザーによると大阪大学のは研究だけだから認める単位はB.A. Degreeに利用できないから東北の方がいいらしい。
     時間がきびしいなら、夏だけのプログラムもある。例えばInternational Alliance of Research Universitiesのプログラムで、UCバークレーの学生は夏に六週間ぐらい東京大学に行ける。でも、短いようだ。
     研究して、私は多分東北大学のプログラムを使う。日本語とコンピュータサイエンスのコースを取るつもりだ。それと、自分の専攻に付いて研究もする。
     つまり、留学をすれば日本でたくさんのことを学びながら単位がdegreeに認めてもらえる。留学ができなければインターンシップなどもいいけど自分の事情によって決める。それより、日本語を学んでいるから日本へ行くべきだ。いい経験になるだろう。

Effectively Learning Chinese Characters - Experiment

Following up on research regarding on effective methods for learning Chinese Characters that I did in Fall 2009, I conducted an experiment to test these effectiveness of some of these methods.

The results indicate that the drawing method was the most effective and the repetition method was the least effective.

However, please note that these results may not be completely accurate due to the small number of students participating in the experiment. Follow-up tests will be necessary to validate these results.

Digital Photography

     Digital Photography is a form of photography in which images are encoded digitally as sequences of 0s and 1s. These images can come from a variety of sources including digital cameras and scanners. Introduced in the 1950s, Digital Photography has come a long way. Originally inferior to traditional Analog Photography, Digital Photography has now surpassed it in most comparisons.
